CHAPTER 24

L uc sat in the meditation room and gazed at Deborah Keap’s photo. He slipped into the grid and located her mind with relative ease. He grasped a sense of her person as his mind was inundated with her unpleasant life of borderline poverty growing up in Stoughton. Her father was violent and oppressive, but he sensed no fear on her part. Only anger. Her mother was distant and mentally deranged, but instead of compassion Deborah only felt disgust. Both of her parents were alcoholics. He learned that Deborah was a girl who often felt distain for others around her, particularly at school where she was prone to fighting and defensiveness against sexual harassment. The main thrust of her personality was rage. She had suffered the stifling fury of sexual abuse as a child. It suffused her with hatred that in her view justified her attitude. She was convinced of her absolute mental and physical superiority and ability to rise above her situation through education. She had an edge over others. She could read minds. Fascinating girl, he thought.

“Why thank you.”

The girl’s voice in his head almost shocked him out of the grid. She sounded like a self-assured child.

“Deborah?”

“You were watching me, or reading me. Whatever it’s called. Who is this? This isn’t Will, is it?”

“My name is Luc. I’m a friend. Yes, I was looking into who you are. I’m trying to save you from Will. Do you know where you are?”

“No. I know that he took me and I’m in a sort of hospital room. He’s keeping me asleep. Who is he?”

“His name is Dr. William Sen and he kidnapped you for your extra sensory abilities. He wants to use you for a government project. You’re in an underground facility in Wyoming, and I’m going to rescue you with my friends.”

“Oh, thank God. Wait, how do I know I can trust you? How did you find me?”

“I’m like you, Deborah. My mind works differently too. I’ve already helped another girl like you who was kidnapped by Dr. Sen. Her name is Caroline. I’m working with other mystics who figured out you were kidnapped. Are you okay? Has he hurt you?”

“He’s keeping me asleep so I don’t really know. But I think I’m okay. I feel separate from my body like I’m floating in space. I see a red grid below me. Will is very interested in this grid. He keeps asking me about it and seems frustrated that he can’t control me. He says I’m not like anyone he’s ever met before. He says I’m special. But he gets almost mad that I’m not telling him what he wants to know. He wants me to look into the grid and tell him what I see, but I don’t see anything. It’s like I’m stuck. I’m really scared, Luc. I feel like I’m in Purgatory and I can’t get out. I make him think I’m his friend, but I’m afraid he’s going to do something terrible to me.
